What TDEE includes

Total daily energy expenditure is everything your body burns in a day, not just at rest. It's made of four parts: basal metabolic rate (BMR, roughly 60–75% of the total for most people), the thermic effect of food (energy spent digesting what you eat, generally a small share), exercise, and NEAT — non-exercise activity thermogenesis, the energy spent on everything from fidgeting to standing to walking around a kitchen. NEAT is the part a calculator can see least clearly, and it's often the biggest reason two similar-looking people end up with different real-world numbers.

Why the activity multiplier matters more than it looks

BMR is fairly predictable from sex, age, height, and weight — the formulas here are validated against decades of research. The activity multiplier is the rougher half of the equation. "Moderately active" is a category covering a wide range of real schedules: someone doing three structured gym sessions and a desk job, and someone doing three sessions plus a physically active job, both might describe themselves that way, yet burn meaningfully different amounts.

That's what the granular mode on this page is for. Instead of picking a label, you enter sessions per week, average session length, and typical intensity, and the calculator maps that onto the same multiplier scale using a piecewise interpolation between the five standard levels. It's a more specific description of your week — not a fundamentally different or more precise formula. The same ±10–15% individual variance still applies underneath it.

Simple levels vs. being specific

Use the five simple levels when you want a quick, directionally sound estimate, or when your week is fairly routine. Switch to granular input when your training changes often, when you're between two labels and can't decide which fits, or when you want the multiplier to reflect a specific block of training rather than a general impression of your lifestyle. Neither mode is more "official" than the other — they're two ways of describing the same activity level, and the right one is whichever more honestly matches how your week actually looks.

Recalculating over time

TDEE isn't fixed. It moves with your weight — a lighter body generally burns somewhat less at rest and in motion — with your training volume, and gradually with age. If you've lost or gained a meaningful amount of weight, changed jobs, started or stopped training, or it's simply been a few months, it's worth running the numbers again rather than trusting a figure calculated for an earlier version of your routine.

Limitations

TDEE from any calculator, granular or not, is an estimate built on population formulas and self-reported activity — it isn't a measurement from a metabolic chamber. Sustained, significant calorie deficits can also modestly lower BMR beyond what reduced body weight alone would predict, an effect generally called adaptive thermogenesis, which means a TDEE calculated at the start of a long diet may run slightly high by the end. Treat the number as a well-reasoned starting point, track real-world weight change over two to three weeks, and adjust from there.

Does eating less lower my TDEE?

Sustained, significant deficits can modestly reduce BMR beyond what reduced body weight alone would predict — a real effect generally called adaptive thermogenesis. It is not large enough to explain stalled weight loss on its own in most cases, but it is part of why very long diets sometimes need a maintenance break or a recalculation.

Is the granular activity mode more accurate than the five levels?
